Following the annexation of Alsace and Lorraine at the end of the Franco-German war of 1871, the earthenware factory of Sarreguemines (now in German territory) allies with the earthenware factory of Digoin, (located some 500 kilometers from Sarreguemines) in order to escape customs duties on the export of its earthenware.
In 1918, Alsace and Lorraine became French again.
