Toutes les grandes inspirations de la faïence française des XVIIè, XVIIIè, XIXè siècle marquent l’histoire de Gien avec bien évidemment également les influences orientales et modernes aujourd’hui.


C’est une faïence de prestige très prisée également à l’étranger.


Les pièces de décoration sont entièrement peintes à la main et un tirage limité conduit à créer un phénomène de rareté, d’où la valeur de certaines pièces.

On aime la finesse de ses décors, la qualité de sa fabrication, sa pâte douce, poreuse et opaque, la variété des pièces produites dans ses formes et dans ses coloris souvent très chauds et tout ça grâce à un savoir-faire artisanal qui ne se dément pas depuis sa création à Gien en 1821. C’est en effet un anglais Thomas Hall qui voulant introduire la faïence fine anglaise en France, crée cette fabrique dans le Loiret produisant à l’origine des pièces à vocation utilitaire. Sont venues ensuite les services de table complets avec pièces décoratives et même, création de services aux armes des grandes familles. Pour les expositions universelles de 1855 et 1900, la faïencerie de Gien crée et présente des pièces exceptionnelles. Au fil des années, un système d’écussons associés à un lettrage est inscrit sur chacune des pièces de Gien; ce qui permet aujourd’hui notamment grâce à la symbolique des “trois tours” de dater assez facilement, les services de tables et autres pièces que l’on trouve chez les antiquaires.

Elle apparaît en France vers 1770, mais devient réellement courante avec l’avènement de la révolution industrielle, la fin du XIX° siècle et le début du XX°.

Les principales manufactures ayant eu une production de Terre de fer se sont situées dans le Nord (faïences du Moulin des Loups, de Saint-Amand, Orchies, Hamage), en région parisienne (faïenceries de Creil, de Montereau, de Choisy-le-Roi), dans l’Est (faïences de Sarreguemines, de Clairefontaine).

La rareté et la beauté des faïences terre de fer en font un must-have intemporel de l’art de la table. Elles sont particulièrement belles lorsqu’elles sont présentées en assortiment dépareillé : le mélange des couleurs et des motifs crées par différentes manufactures fait ressortir leur élégance singulière.
